Steel City SQL July Meeting

leave a comment »

Join us on Tuesday the 21st at New Horizons Computer Learning Center for our July meeting. This meeting will feature Kevin Boles, SQL Server MVP of Indicium Resorces, presenting on SQL Server Service Broker.  Service Broker is the built-in asynchronous messaging subsystem provided with SQL Server.  We will examine new terminology as well as get a grounding in how we can setup and use Service Broker for messaging applications.  We live in an increasingly interconnected world and having a system that can handle intermittent connections and asynchronous processing can solve many business problems.  And if MySpace can use it to pass hundreds of millions of messages around their system per day, it can probably do whatever you need it to do as well!

Kevin is a SQL Server guru, working exclusively with the product since version 6.5. With over fifteen years of IT industry experience, he holds every SQL Server certification including MCT and MVP. Kevin has been a very successful independent consultant for the past ten years.

As usual the meeting will begin at 6:00pm with a thirty minute networking session with Kevin’s presentation beginning at 6:30pm.  If you plan on attending this month’s meeting let us know by sending us an RSVP so we can get an accurate headcount for the food.  Hope to see you there.

BSDA Meeting for July 9th 2009 – Intro to WCF

leave a comment »

At the next BSDA Meeting, taking place July 9th 2009 Jeff Barnes, MVP will present Introduction to WCF. Windows Communication Foundation (WCF) is a major advancement within the Microsoft .NET platform that allows for easily exposing units of functionality as services that are accessible via a broad spectrum of communication protocols. WCF has been built from the ground up around a highly flexible and extensible model that allows developers to concentrate on business problems rather than the details of communication plumbing. Write your business logic once and simply expose it over the necessary protocols via configuration without changing a line of code! If this sounds interesting, please join me for a crash course in the fundamental concepts of WCF. This session is packed with material and strives to significantly reduce the learning curve for those that are new to the technology by providing an introduction to essential features and capabilities of the WCF platform.

 LINQ Bootcamp

At the meeting we will also discuss the upcoming LINQ Bootcamp on July 25th and 26th. To register for this great event please go to http://www.clicktoattend.com/?id=139378 . Seating is limited to this free event. We still need volunteers for presenting, currently more than half the chapters are still available. Your participation is needed to make this event a success so be ready to pick out a chapter when you arrive, first come first serve. You can also e-mail us at BhamSoftwareDevAssoc@live.com to volunteer or get more info.

Update: as of 7/6/09 Chapters 3, 9, 10, 11, and 12 have been volunteered for, other chapters are still open to potential presenters. All presenters will get a free copy of the book.

Bio

Jeff Barnes is a passionate software developer and advocate of the Microsoft .NET platform.  He has an intense conviction that developers should always strive to better themselves and avoid the trap of becoming complacent with their skills.  His enthusiasm is deeply rooted in engineering solutions for the unique challenges often found within the realm of distributed systems. This passion has driven him to become involved with the developer community in order to evangelize the benefits of .NET.  Jeff currently works as a Software Engineer for DAXKO, a leading provider of operations and financial management solutions for member-centric nonprofits.  He is also a Microsoft MVP for Connected Systems.

Meeting Logistics

This meeting will occur on July 9, 2009. As usual we will have meet and greet from 6:30 to 7:00 and the presentation from 7:00 to 8:00. Our meeting, as well as the LINQ Bootcamp, will take place at the New Horizons Training Center in Homewood. A big thanks to them for the use of the facility.
